About Anthony Gomes & the New Soul Cowboys
Hailing originally from Toronto, Canada, Anthony Gomes began writing songs when he picked up his first guitar at the age of 14. He honed his songwriting, guitar and vocal skills playing in local rock bands, until which time he first heard a B.B. King album which transformed his ambitions into becoming the guitar connoisseur of the blues. In his quest to unearth the history of the Blues, Anthony went to the extent of selecting the subject matter of The Racial Evolution of the Blues for his Master’s Thesis. In an effort to dig deeper into the roots of the Blues Anthony, for a period of time resided in the Home of the Blues – Chicago. It was during this period of his career that he further refined his chops – gaining notoriety playing in the famous Blues bars of the destination city for tourists visiting from all corners of the world. Anthony’s guitar and vocal style of the blues were so accepted that in 1998 he won the coveted Buddy Guy’s Legends Best Unsigned Blues Band competition, and was, and remains today, the only white band leader to front a band at the world renowned Kingston Mines. Gomes has shared the stage with Gretchen Wilson, Big and Rich, Robert Cray, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, 38 Special, blues legends BB King and Buddy Guy, Robert Plant and The Doobie Brothers. For the past four consecutive years in a row he has been nominated by the world’s largest online blues publication Blueswax.com for Best Blues Artist having won this prestigious award on one occasion. Anthony Gomes has been featured in the pages of Vintage Guitar, Blues Revue, and Down Beat magazines.
